Popular Careers Dealing With Language

The economic downturn has made it extremely difficult for people out of work to find jobs. If you are in the midst of considering a career change and desire a career that deals with language, look into the medical field. This is one of the few growing industries with positions like speech pathologist in great demand.

Most people are pretty familiar with a wide variety of jobs in medicine, but what about speech pathologists? The work can be very rewarding emotionally as well as financially.

Speech pathology positions are available in hospitals, clinics, and schools all across the country. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association reports that the median pay for the position is $70,000 per year. One of the most important roles of the pathologist is working in education and helping students overcome linguistic problems that are affecting their work in the classroom.

Now is an excellent time to enter this medical field; the Department of Labor reports the job outlook for speech pathologists is favorable. Employment will grow by almost 20% before the end of this decade.

Another popular career choice dealing with language is a translator. There are a growing number of U.S. companies doing business overseas in Europe, Asia, and South America that need interpreters who are fluent in several languages. Spanish is most in demand. Language specialists who work for the federal government can earn up to $80,000 per year.

Many research methods exist for gathering information in a study. Whether on the phone or in person, the personal interview is an important strategy for gathering information and arriving at important conclusions.

The Interview Approach

When conducting a personal interview, the interviewing technique is of the utmost important. An unskilled interviewer can impact the outcome of a study just by virtue of the way he or she phrases questions and responds to study subjects. Therefore, interviewers must possess key characteristics and undergo specialized training.

Characteristics of the Interviewer

Here are a few important qualities of a research interviewer:

Clarity: The interviewer must speak clearly and ask questions that are easy to understand and uncomplicated.

Knowledge: Familiarity with the study parameters and the general study topic are important for directing the conversation and making important observations.

Objectivity: An interviewer must not have preexisting judgments about study outcomes or negative reactions to interviewee answers based on personal and subjective opinions.

Structure: A skilled interviewer understands how to steer a conversation, and structures the interview in such a way to minimize tangential information. The interviewer adheres to the key points relevant to the study.

Personal Interview Methods

Study interviews can be conducted over the phone, via videoconferencing or in person. The telephone method can be convenient, saving commute time for both the interviewer and the interviewee. Additionally, an interviewee may feel more comfortable over the phone.

Videoconferencing also saves commute time and allows the interviewer to observe mannerisms and body language. In-person interviews are arguably the most ideal format, allowing interviewers to establish a rapport with interviewees that may lead to obtaining more in-depth answers.

When one pictures urban fashion and celebrities, one usually thinks in terms of hip-hop music, flashy clothes and rappers.

True, many rappers have become the icon of success in urban clothing, while also turning into multi-millionaires. What most people do not appreciate is the research, education, and technology needed to achieve this kind of success.

Apple Bottom clothes came into being because of the foresight of well-known rap artist, Nelly. Along with his business partners, the concept of a beautiful line of urban clothes for women became of prime importance.

Research was extensive on the issues of how to best design clothes that would really flatter a womanly figure and still have the urban chicness that was so desirable. Apple Bottom Clothes were designed to be a line that fit the woman, and not vice versa.

From the beginning, Nelly was heavily involved in the concept and creation of this unique product. From Internet and database studies to actual designs and creation of product, the Apple Bottom line was carefully constructed.

Once the concept was solid, there was a 6 day reality TV tour to seek out the perfect models for the line; these were models that would highlight the womanly advantages of the Apple Bottom brand. The show was highly successful and guaranteed the success of the now famous Apple Bottom line.

Today, Apple Bottom is well-known and sought after. Again with technology, and because of the foresight of rapper Nelly, women can search the Internet for Apple Bottom sites and become acquainted with all the beautiful clothing that signifies this fabulous brand.

Remember, true and technology always go hand-in-hand.

Computer Education

Most of us use our computers to find places we need to go, do research for school, check out a new restaurant, the very basics that a computer is capable of.  We have not even scratched the surface.  The capabilities of a computer are virtually endless, cyber space awaits.  There are courses in computer education offered at every college in the country, and most high schools who offer night school for adults.  These courses cover the very basics in computer knowledge, starting with turning the computer on, to navigating and surfing the web with ease.  If you are taking this course through an adult education program, the cost is minimal and the benefit is more than worth it.

A good computer education course will start with putting you at ease with your computer.  Knowing how to do things makes people more comfortable with them.  Perhaps understanding where your computer goes to get the information it is bringing you can make using it much easier.  You may even learn some techniques on fixing small glitches, getting your computer up and running again, avoiding the high cost of computer experts, or the time wasted dropping off a computer at a shop to be fixed.  Of course, more serious problems will need to be taken care of by professionals, but many computer problems can be handled by just a few keystrokes or resetting the unit itself, all of which you will learn in a general computer class.

You can also bond with the other computer virgins, and find out that you are not alone on this journey.  Computers are here to stay, most high schools now distribute them to incoming freshman in the form of laptops.  If nothing else, learn how to keep an eye on what your children are doing.  While the Internet is amazing, our children can go places they should not, and your knowledge of the way the computer works will help you keep an eye on this.

Online Learning

Attending college online is the most flexible and convenient way for many students to pursue their educational goals. There are very few, if any, truly prohibitive situations that would interfere with a student attending online classes. The attraction of online programs vary, but most students like the scheduling flexibility that it offers in deciding what courses to take, when the best study times are and avoiding any additional or unnecessary expenses that are associated with furthering their education.

When a student is trying to decide the direction for their online studies, they should take a detailed look at the online school(s) that they’re considering to be sure that they offer what they need.

  • Will the coursework be substantial to help them find employment later on?
  • Will the timeline of the college coursework (which can take anywhere from 10 to 60 months) fit with the long-term plans of the student?
  • Will the coursework and professors allow you to do everything virtually, and will you ever be required to do any portion of your studies at the college’s main campus (if there is one)?

There are many other compelling reasons for students to consider online learning. Pursuing a degree through distance learning also helps students save on vehicle expenses, parking, and fuel costs. Obtaining additional help with childcare is also eliminated since the student or parent doesn’t have to leave their desktop to go to school. Finally, one of the biggest costs is materials like course books, study guides, or lab books since a lot of the online college work is done via computer, eliminating the need for physical books. If however the student does need these materials, they can download and print guides as needed, and avoid shipping costs from the university to their desk, making it a winning situation for the student.

How To Talk To The Internet

The home computer.  How did a family ever survive without it?  The kids can navigate it like it is their best friend and some of the adults attack it as if it were their worst enemy.  Becoming familiar with how to navigate through cyber world will make the trip that much easier.  Learn how to use your home computer.  Ask the kids, they will show you.

Most home computers are set up such that as soon as you turn them on, you will be taken to your own home page.  Whoever set up the computer for you has probably taught you how to get to at least this part.  On most home pages there is a search engine.  This is your question and answer place.  This is where you can find the information you need, or at least find a way to the information you may need.  There are search engines that are set up so that you can ask for the information you need in the form of a question.  The computer will then give you suggestions of sites that contain the information you are looking for.

Phrase your question carefully.  Do not ask, “Where can I get my hair done?” if you are looking for a beauty salon, rather ask “Where are the salons in . . .?”, placing the name of the city and state in which you are looking.  Remember that many states have the same city names, so be as specific as possible.  Use adjectives to describe what you are looking for, it will narrow your search.  Instead of looking for a “field”, ask for a “white corn field of more than 10 acres in . . .” again stating the city and state in which you are looking.

Think of the search engine as a telephone operator, the more information you give, the more likely you are to get the right number, and then you can talk to the Internet.

Overlooked Sources on the Campus Website

Every college has a school website that’s dedicated to making information easily accessible to students, faculty, and the community as a whole. While the website is a great place to find all kinds of documentation from course descriptions to tuition information to semester calendars, there are also many features that are simply overlooked.

Counseling Center Online

The webpage dedicated to the counseling center is one of the most valuable resources you can have. You can find information on what you need to transfer, what kinds of classes you need to take, as well as information on the counseling center itself. You’ll be able to make appointments to discuss your educational future, and some colleges have active chat rooms where you can communicate with a representative from the counseling center.

Sports Information Office

The athletic department regularly posts athlete profiles and team rosters. This is where you want to go if you want the latest information on game scores and player stats. You can also find photographs of past games, and sometimes they’ll post game reviews as well. This is a quick way to stay up to date with college sports teams if you’re unable to make any of the games.

Performing Arts Center

The performing arts center provides a plethora of information regarding art shows and theatre productions, as well as campus concerts and dance performances. You’ll be able to read theatre reviews, and follow the art calendar so you know when each performance is going to take place. This is also where you want to go if you need info on the upcoming art festivals and student contests.

Financial Aid Office

The financial aid webpage usually contains a calendar of important dates, such as when tuition is due and when grant payments and student loans are expected to arrive. From this page you can also check your eligibility for scholarships, and you should find a link to the FAFSA website.
